What accounting integration means
Every contract event — a booking, a payment, a fee, a reversal — creates accounting entries. The question is whether those entries reach your general ledger automatically or whether your team rebuilds them by hand at month-end.
Ask Constellation how journal entries flow: a pre-built connector to your accounting package, an export file, or an API. Each path has a different labor profile.
The reconciliation test
Reconciliation means proving two systems agree. Ask to see the reconciliation report: contract balances on one side, general ledger on the other, differences listed. If that report does not exist, your team builds it in a spreadsheet every month.
Price that monthly labor with the tool below. Count each hand-built reconciliation as one record and the hours your team spends on it.
Demo checks
- Book a contract and show the initial entries.
- Post a payment and show the entries it creates.
- Reverse the payment and show the correction.
- Show the month-end reconciliation report.
The exception to check
Ask what happens when a posting job fails silently. A failed posting should raise an alert the same day, not surface as a month-end mystery. How a platform handles silent failures tells you more than its feature list.
Also ask how the platform handles a mid-month rate change on a variable-rate contract. The interest split before and after the change must be exact, and your auditors will check it.
Then ask which accounting packages have working connections today, and which need a file export. A file export is not a failure, but it is a monthly task someone must own.

Manual re-keying cost
Count how many records your team re-types each month and how long each takes. Loaded hourly cost means wage plus benefits and overhead.
| Hours per month | 10.0 |
| Labor value per month | $350 |
| Rekey labor + software per funded deal | $14.00 |
Cost per deal covers only re-keying labor plus the software line item. It is not a full origination cost.
